What is Premium-Grade Travertine?

Not all Travertine is the same! Travertine is sourced from all over the world. There are very different quality grades available from these geological sources, and these classifications can make a drastic difference in the appearance and durability of the stone. Poor outcomes occur when an inappropriate thickness, type, or grade of travertine is used for the specific application and environment.

ORIJIN STONE only sells premium-grade Travertine. “Premium” is an industry term for the highest quality Travertine available. This grade is hand-selected for the most consistent coloring, the least amount of honeycomb (porous holes), cracks, or chipped edges, and produced with the most consistent thickness. You can see and feel how much heavier and dense our stone is. Some suppliers will mislabel their products as “Premium,” but at ORIJIN, you can see and feel the difference.

There are also “standard” and “commercial” grades of travertine available on the market, but they are of substantially lesser quality. These stones will be notably more “honeycombed” in their texture; the color will not be as consistent, and in some cases, they may even fill the holes with epoxy in an effort to disguise the flaws. Unfortunately, most people who have experience with Travertine are used to these commonly used lesser grades, because most suppliers find that they can make the most profit by selling stone that is less expensive to start with. At ORIJIN STONE, we stake our reputation on keeping our clients thrilled with their investment and selling stone that is meant to last. We always reject any stone pieces that are less than premium, and so should you!

Known for its distinct texture and classic, natural appearance, travertine stone is an exquisite building material for various design projects. Its versatility makes it a perfect fit for interior spaces such as foyers, kitchens, and bathrooms, and prominent exterior spaces like verandas, pool decks, and walkways. Durable and easy to maintain, travertine offers a timeless yet contemporary feel that elevates any space.

Key Benefits of Travertine Stone

Travertine has many outstanding features and qualities besides its refined and versatile appearance.

Heat Resistance

Its unique resistance to heat, which keeps the stone cool underfoot, is a major advantage to consider when selecting a pool surround material or a patio that may get extra use during the hot summer season.

Mold Resistance

Travertine is also naturally resistant to mold, offers a smooth yet tactile surface, and comes in a range of neutral colors to suit any design.

Aesthetic Appeal

Travertine’s natural color palette of creams, beiges, and warm earth tones brings timeless beauty to both interiors and exteriors, complementing a wide range of design styles. In a dry-laid application, this stone can be set without a very minimal joint, which lends a very even and clean aesthetic.

Slip Resistance

Although its smooth surface is honed and softly tumbled, our Travertine offers a surprising amount of slip resistance. The ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) is a federal code requiring a static friction coefficient of 0.05. Travertine ranges from 0.06-0.07. Most concrete pavers rate a 0.07. Many people are initially concerned that Travertine may be too slippery but do not realize that this exterior stone is much safer than what is most often used for interior tile, especially tile most often used in wet bathrooms and kitchens.

Durability

At ORIJIN STONE, we select only the Travertine varieties that can withstand our harsh freeze and thaw seasons. Not all types and colors of Travertine are suited for this northern climate. We put our Travertine through rigorous testing to provide official data for each variety. Travertine pavers are highly durable; they have been in nature for thousands of years and in freezing temperatures. On average, our Travertine has a higher compressive strength than any concrete product.

Quality and Longevity

At ORIJIN STONE, we recommend and offer the best sealing products available on the market to prolong the life and durability of your stone. Travertine’s color will not fade, and providing that the stone was installed correctly and cared for, your Travertine installation will be a beautiful and valuable addition to your landscape for many, many years to come.
